Portsmouth and Southampton Takeovers – Press Coverage

Posted on | June 26, 2009 | No Comments

Short post today. A few words on the press coverage relating to the prospective takeovers of both Portsmouth and Southampton Football Clubs.

This is not short because it is a less interesting or less noteworthy subject than usual. It is not even short because I have less to say about it. On the contrary, I could go on for hours. It is short because the article links I have included can largely speak for themselves, and if I were to allow it to become too long, I would begin ranting and swearing. This would perhaps be amusing at first, but would quickly become offensive!

Let’s deal with Portsmouth first. Here is The Sun’s latest revelation, which as far as I can see, amounts to the fact that more than one wealthy person wants to inject funds into Pompey. Of course, it is not billed that way. It’s ‘Pompeygate, Part 5′ (excuse me while I wipe the coffee stains from my PC monitor; I accidentally spat it out while struggling to contain my laughter, you see). This is, as the name would suggest, the fifth insallment of what can now only be described as an unfathomable attempt at journalistic self-humiliation. I seriously have reached the point where I can’t help laughing at it. It may not be too long before the rest of football, and not just fans of Portsmouth, feel the same way. Let’s hope so. Carry on the good work.

Meanwhile, in todays’s Southampton Daily Echo there is an equally funny newspaper story regarding the proposed takeover of Southampton. It’s funny to us Portsmouth fans anyway. Now, I’m not saying that I wish Southampton out of existence. Just that it would be nice to think that they haven’t quite reached the bottom yet and have a bit more suffering to go through, along the lines of what Pompey endured in the late seventies. In the meantime, we can set about bringing Portsmouth into the 21st Century, and re-establishing our rightful status as the south coast’s premier club. This article would suggest that further Saints suffering might well be just around the corner, as it seems that the money man behind the Matthew Le Tissier fronted takeover, is in fact a letting agent living with his parents!

I have to say I would be slightly more worried about an article alleging no funds than one about backing to the tune of £300m, but of course the most likely outcome is that Southampton are saved, either by this consortium or another. The irony is that there are two ridiculous takeover articles here, one critical of the club concerned for having no backing and one critical of the club concerned for, well I don’t know really! Not for having too much money, surely?!

I’ll leave you with a comedy sketch I recently enjoyed. I hope you do too.
